By Rowe LeathersContributor, Career Services I am often asked that question, and my usual answer when asked is, I dont know. My answer is not meant to be flippant; however, I believe the better question is, When should I update my resume? Your resume is a reflection of your professional life. It should be updated periodically as you advance in your profession. If you are not updating your resume with new information, achievements, or education, consider taking an assessment of where you are in your career. Long periods without making updates on your resume may be an indication that your career is not progressing. New information does not have to be a major change in your career. Small changes in your job role may be enough to warrant making small adjustments. The new addition to your resume should convey your qualification and professional development in your field. If you find yourself needing to make updates to your resume, you should embrace the opportunity with excitement! Updates mean that you have had new experiences and that you are developing as a professional. Recent activity in your career may mean you are moving towards a new area of specialization. Consider these as reasons to make updates: Promotion Additional education New certification or license Recent accomplishment For those who are eager to energize their resume, but feel they have little to share, there are steps you can take while you wait for the next promotion. Consider the following options: Become a member of a professional association for your industry Seek opportunities to give back to your community and volunteer your expertise Get involved with committees at work that provide opportunities to try out new roles and learn new skills Updates to your resume will infuse new energy both on paper and in your confidence. Confidence in your job role will help you step out of your comfort zone. Knowing that you are developing as a professional will motivate you to step up to new challenges that may lead to opportunities with new possibilities.
