Lean In Study Finds Most Women Face Sexist Racist Workplace Microagressions
Lean In Study Finds Most Women Face Sexist Racist Workplace MicroagressionsLean In Study Finds Most Women Face Sexist Racist Workplace Microagressions A new study out from LeanIn.org and McKinsey & Company reveals that women face a larger uphill battle than once thought.Almost two-thirds of women have dealt with microaggressions, which can be subtle or explicit forms of everyday sexism and racism, reads this years study . For example, women have to provide mora evidence of their competence and they are also twice as likely as men to have been mistaken for someone mora junior. Black women and lesbian women experience microaggressions at a higher rate than women overall, 69% and 71%, respectively.Women in the Workplace 2018 is a comprehensive study of the experiences women in corporate America face- the largest study of its kind. Since 2015, McKinsey & Company and LeanIn.Org have published this report annually to give companies and working women and men the insights and information they need to advance womens leadership and gender equality within their organizations. This year, 279 companies employing more than 13 million people shared their pipeline data and completed a survey of their HR practices. More than 64,000 employees participated in a survey of their experiences in the workplace regarding gender, career opportunities, and work-life issues. One of the other key findings of the annual study shows that women remain significantly underrepresented in corporate America. While women of color are the most underrepresented group of all, the study found that women of all backgrounds are continuing to push for promotions at the saatkorn rate as men, negotiating salaries at the same rates as men and even earning degrees at a higher rate than men.Despite doing their part, women, the study found, get less of the manager support that advances careers. Men are more likely to have managers that give them the resources they need to climb the ladder and have more opportunities to showcase their work. The solution? LeanIn insists that companies must turn good intentions into concrete action in order to achieve equality. While the vast majority of companies say they are committed to gender and racial diversity and equality, many still do not treat diversity as a business imperative.Only 13 percent of companies quantify the impact gender diversity will have on the business, the study reveals. Less than 15 percent set representation targets for gender and race combined and share a majority of diversity metrics with employees. And only 16 percent hold managers and directors accountable for making progress.Companies should take steps to reduce the number of women who feel isolated and vulnerable. Many companies need to change the way they think about adding women to their organization which means moving beyond the mindset of one and done and pushing to add women until they reach true parity. In addition to increasing the representation of women, companies should be thoughtful about how they move women through their organizations. One approach is to hire and promote women in cohorts and cluster women on teams.Employers, to learn more about being a diverse and inclusive workplace, download

Goal! Keeping Sports Available to Kids
Goal Keeping Sports Available to KidsGoal Keeping Sports Available to KidsAt Robert Half, what we do is helping people do what they love. For Jim Dinneen, that extends outside the office. Dinneen, the executive director of Robert Halfs Salaried Professional Service, co-founded and helps run a nonprofit foundation called Spartans4Life that enables children to play hockey - even when the cost of the sport gets prohibitive for their families.Along with a handful of friends and local business leaders in the New Hampshire area, Dinneen created the nonprofit as an arm of the Sports4Life Foundation, which started in Canada. The goal is to provide financial aid to families in need, so that their sons or daughters can keep playing the sport they love. With equipment, tournament fees, ice rink time and other costs, playing in a hockey league can cost a few thousand dollars, whether for a 6-year-old child or an 18-year-old high schooler.Hockey has always been a big part of Dinneens life, starti ng with his high school and college days as an athlete. He even played professionally for a couple of years in the minor leagues. His 12-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter play the sport, following in their fathers skate tracks.Based in Manchester, N.H., Dinneen still remembers the first time his organization was able to help someone, about four years ago. A parent in his kids league, where he volunteer-coaches, was diagnosed with cancer. The family ended up in debt, but the group was able to fully fund everything for their son to continue playing hockey. Its a little thing that allows them some normalcy, Dinneen said. And the parents didnt have to worry about their child notlage being able to play. That was really rewarding.Since then, the organization has been able to repeat the gift of sports over and over again. Dinneen has found that hockey teaches important life skills, including teamwork and discipline. The group organizes three or four fundraisers a year, most of which are h eld on weekends. Sure, it takes a lot of time to plan events and manage a nonprofit. But much like how we work here, Dinneen finds that technology and mobility are most helpful in fitting everything in.We mostly do conference calls at night, and it doesnt matter where Im at - California, Boston or wherever, Dinneen said. Moreover, taking on this kind of commitment isnt a struggle to balance with other parts of his life because he does it with his friends, so they integrate responsibilities with family and friend time. Our whole families will get together to hang out, Dinneen said. We carve out some time to plan our next fundraiser, decide where to allocate money and discuss other board business. Its a commitment, but its extremely rewarding, especially when we get a letter from a family weve assisted saying how much their kid loves hockey, Dinneen continued. It matters that they get to keep doing the thing they love.

Communications and Penn State
Communications and Penn State Communications and Penn State Communications and Penn StateBy Alaina G. LevineCommunication, whether formal, informal, verbal, non-verbal, internal or external, is vital for ensuring the realization of any plan. By contributing to their Diversity Action Grant (DAG) project, members of the Pennsylvania State University ASME Student Section had the remarkable opportunity to sharpen an entire suite of communications skills early in their career. They gained experience in public speaking and writing as well as complementary talents in persuasion, negotiation, marketing, and advocacy, all of which will serve them well throughout their careers.Penn States project, Its All About M.E., aims to diversify the mechanical engineering major and encourage more women to enroll in classes. It is a year-long affair, and includes many veranstaltungs and touchpoints, such as a kick-off orientation, lab tours, a lunch and learn with the mechanical engineering department hea d, and a study session. Peer beratung also takes place, in which freshmen and sophomore ME majors are assigned to mentors who are upperclassmen. From fostering interaction between the mentors and protgs, to conducting more efficient brainstorming sessions, the DAG project organizers have greatly enhanced their oratory abilities. In particular, it takes courage to speak in front of a group of people, says Lola Buonomo, immediate past chair of the ASME Student Section. Ive seen myself grow as a speaker, and I can now speak freely with ease rather than depending on pre-written notes. She observed the same improvement in both the upperclassmen mentors and the underclassmen protgs We see the ladies we mentor quiet at first, and then very soon, they are asking the mentors how they can help advance the program.Keeping a kollektiv focused can be challenging, especially as group dynamics change as students graduate and new members migrate in. A well thought out communications strategy, in wh ich team members feel safe in presenting innovative notions, is the solution. Its important to give the opportunity to provide feedback, says Buonomo. As members suggest new event ideas for the project, such as a tour of a new lab, the team openly caucuses and carefully reflects on its capacity to add the event to the schedule. The individual contributions are honored and respected, even if the team decides to go in a different direction. Buonomo also encourages her team members to identify the value of each others unique proposition and leverage it for the teams success. Its All About M.E. has been in existence for several years, and the ASME Student Section has implemented numerous feedback mechanisms to measure its success and look for avenues to improve. We have experimented with different events and have been collecting data on their success, describes Buonomo. The team designed surveys, which also tested their communications abilities. In examining what has and hasnt worked the students, changed the product depending on the needs of the protgs, she says. For example, we realized it was better to have more events in the spring rather than fall, when it is a busier time.As the Student Section looks to plan another year of events, it is also looking for new ways to articulate its goals, and effectively market and promote the events to everyone involved. Sharing information with your team is job number one. Make the team a part of the mission, advises Buonomo. You have to get their buy-in and once you have that youre really unstoppable. Of course, theres also one additional secret of effective team management which involves creative communication free food doesnt hurtGot a Project Idea Your Student Section Can Apply for a Diversity Action Grant This project was supported by the ASME Diversity Action Grant (DAG) program that offers ASME student sections the opportunity to conduct mechanical engineering focused events/projects that promote STEM education and t he inclusion of under-served communities and women. Diversity Action Grant Applicationsmay be submitted from the Beginning of the Fall Semester until the Deadline of November 1st.

Women in Tech Are Rising Higher in China Than in the U.S. - The ... Careers for Women in Technology Companies Are a Global Challenge One of the biggest challenges in almost all industries today is achieving gender parity. Gender diversity provides huge benefits in the w orkplace. pWhile some industries have made significant advancements in gender diversity, some industries lag further behind... and the construction industry is well-known for being in the latter category. If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hats analyzing an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaffold. And men at work signs only help to reinforce this image.pThis stereotype is rooted in reality. When was the brde time you actually spotted a woman on a construction site? Or hired a female plumber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statisticsreports that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 million construction employees are women.pBut the construction industry has a lot more to offer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the industry in this era of rapid change. Here are 5 reasons why women joining the workforce or looking t o make a pivot should consider a career in construction.h21. Fuel Innovation/h2pNot only is diversity the socially and morally right thing to do, but it is also actually an excellent business strategy. pResearch presented in the Harvard Business Reviewshows that diverse teams develop more innovative ideas. This is further supported by a study conducted by Gallupon the performance of gender-diverse teams versus single-gender teams, which found that the difference in backgrounds and perspectives lumineszenzdiode to better business performance and problem-solving. h22. Capitalize on Demand/h2pThe construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming and projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries, with total spending projected to exceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most construction companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to the Associated General Contractors of America/a, more than 80% of contractors are exp eriencing difficulties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction workforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of open stable and high-paying roles (any project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportunities/h2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 million managerial positions in construction.br/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construction work, more women in leadership roles would help drive innovation and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leadership position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive change for the industry and make it a more attractive option for other women.h24. High-Income Potential/h2pSalaries for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, making a construction career a prime choice for women looking for a high-paying job,p The 2018 Construction Craft Salary Surveyconducted by the National Center for Construction Education and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supervisors topped the list at $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of combo welders ($71,067), instrumentation technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222), power line workers ($68,262) and industrial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned an average salary of $60,000 or higher.h25. Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful and the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a school, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long way to go in combating gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction industry.
